Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I get started?
The first step to joining any Adult Basic Skills Department classes is to apply to join our program. You can do that by submitting an Adult Basic Skills application.  After you apply, we will invite you to schedule an orientation appointment.
Can I take classes online?
Yes, we are currently offering both virtual and in-person classes.
When and where are classes offered?
Virtual classes meet at specific days and times on Zoom. In-person classes are typically offered at the main campus (Albany), Lebanon Center, Benton Center, and the DHS building in Corvallis on Research Way. We have daytime, evening and some Saturday options. Not all classes are offered every term.
Can I start at any time?
While most classes start at the beginning of a new term, some classes are open enrollment. Usually we can get you started at any point in the term. We will help you prepare to register for the classes you want at the start of the next term.
What is a CASAS test?
Students in any ABS classes will take a CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems) test when they enter the program and then usually once a term to monitor progress. This test shows your level and helps us get you into the right class. Taking the CASAS is a requirement and you are able to schedule the test either in person or virtually at your convenience.

Questions About the GED

How do I get my GED?
You earn your GED by passing four GED subject area tests: language arts, math, science, and social studies.
How do I prepare for my GED tests?
It’s up to you: we offer in person or virtual GED preparation classes, or you can study on your own.
How do I get started?
The first step to begin GED classes is to complete our online orientation. You can start orientation any time.
Can I just go take the test?
Yes, but it is not recommended unless you are sure you’re prepared to pass. You’ll need to set up an account at GED Testing Service to make an appointment for official testing. Through GED Testing Service, you can also purchase “GED Ready,” which is the official GED practice test. A GED Ready test lets you know if you are likely to pass or if you should consider prep classes. GED Ready can be done online from home. Official testing is available at the 博天堂官方 Albany campus and is scheduled through your GED Testing Service account. Additionally, you may have the option to take an official test online if you meet certain requirements. More information here.
How much does the GED test cost?
Official GED testing is $38 per subject. There are four subject tests.
Can I get my GED if I am under 18?
The GED credential and our GED prep classes are meant for adults, but we can make exceptions for those aged 16 and 17. They should have a “release from compulsory attendance” letter from their most recently-attended high school or get a “parent assurance” and “GED authorization letter” from the Linn-Benton-Lincoln ESD homeschool office (541-812-2687). No one under the age of 16 is eligible for GED classes or GED testing.
I took my GED a long time ago. Do I need to retake my tests?
The GED test was last updated in 2014. If you tested after 2014, your scores are still valid and can be accessed through your GED Testing Service account. If your scores were from before 2014, you will need to retake your tests.
How can I get a copy of my GED transcript/record?
You can request this at GED Testing Service or by calling at 877-392-6433. 博天堂官方 does not keep GED records.
Can I take my GED classes in Spanish?
Yes! More information at GED en Español or by calling 541-917-4710
What happens if I don’t feel ready to take my official GED test at the end of a term? Can I retake a class?
Our subject-based classes (Science, Language Arts, etc) are designed to help you learn what you need to know to pass the official test in that subject area after one term. You will take an official practice test, the GED Ready, at the end of the class. However, sometimes students want to repeat the class and that is okay. Students can take any subject-based class no more than three times. It is important to attend all of your classes, participate, and do your homework.

Questions About ELA (English Classes)

What is ELA?
ELA stands for “English Language Acquisition”. They are English classes to help you develop skills to use English for work and/or going to college.
I’m visiting the United States, can I take ELA classes?

ELA classes are funded by the U.S. government to prepare people for working and/or going to school in the United States. If you will live permanently in the United States you are eligible for our classes. If you are planning to return to your home country someday, you are not eligible for our ELA classes.

If you are here on a visa that does not allow you to work and go to school, we can help you find other area programs. If you are an international student, we recommend ELCI. If you are not an international student, there are English classes available through 博天堂官方’s Community Education department that are open to visitors. Please contact Sue Stone (stones@al10669.com) for more information.
How do I get started?

The first step to joining ELA classes is to complete our online orientation. You can start orientation any time.

What is the difference between Fast Track and Community ELA?

Fast Track is an intensive program designed for students who need English skills for work and/or college and want to move quickly toward their goals. Students should have at least 10 or more hours a week for classes and homework. Fast Track students will take core English classes as well as computer, basic math, and college readiness classes. Community ELA is for students who have less time to attend classes and do homework. These classes will focus on day to day English needed for life in the United States.

Can my child attend these classes? What are your age requirements?

These classes are meant for adults 18 and over. Rarely, we can accept those aged 16 or 17 who have been formally released from compulsory education or have documentation to show they have graduated high school from a home country. No one under the age of 16 is eligible for ELA. 博天堂官方 does not allow children to attend classes with parents or guardians.

Questions About Attendance and Course Fees

Can I register if I can’t attend class every time the class meets?

You should be prepared to attend each class you sign up for at least 90% of the time, which means you can have no more than two unexcused absences per term. This includes online classes. We offer day, evening and some weekend classes. We can’t help you meet your goals if you aren’t in class.

Missing a lot of classes will affect your progress in the program and can affect whether or not you are able to register for future terms.

How much does it cost?

Class fees in the Adult Basic Skills Department are $33 per term. You may take more than one class for that fee if you can meet the attendance requirements.

How do I pay my registration fee?
  1. Online through Webrunner
  2. Call the Business Office at 541-917-4312 (8:30am - 4:30pm, Monday to Friday)
  3. Visit the Business Office in Calapooia Center, or the front desk at Lebanon or Benton Center
  4. Mail a check or money order (no cash, please) to:

Linn-Benton Community College
Calapooia Center, Attn: Business Office
6500 Pacific Blvd SW
Albany, OR 97321

What is the deadline to pay my fee?
Please try to pay your fee by the end of the first week of the term. To avoid a registration hold on your account, pay your fee before it’s time to register for a new term.
